CHAPTER TWENTY

Dean

DAMNIT, MY BACK STINGS, even while lacking real flesh as a soul. I’m no wimp, but that shit smarts, ok?

I trudge back over sand and dunes, grumbling the whole way. At least there are no Ivan thug creatures on my tail... yet. So, um, yeah, what was that all about? What was the point of all the getting captured shenanigans? What is the Liberator’s grand plan? Because right now I feel like a particularly stupid puppet dancing uncontrollably while the puppet master cackles like a lunatic.

My thoughts churn one over the other. Abigail is Ivan’s new reaper. That’s... well, a hell of a lot to take in. And Ivan seems to have some creepy fascination with her—he couldn’t seem to take his eyes off of her even while I was being brutalized—and I doubt she took on her new role willingly. I pity the kid; she’s got her work cut out for her and her hands full of crap I’d rather not touch with a ten-foot pole. I pray Ivan shows mercy on her for the stabbiness. She deserves better; hell, even I deserve better than this place.

But again, I ask... what was the point of all that?

After some time, and much whining, I make it back to the apparently invisible cavern where my parents are waiting for me, their faces relieved when they see me approach.

“Oh, thank goodness you’re all right. I knew we could trust the Liberator,” Adam says with a loud puff of a sigh, racing toward me with his wife right by his side.

“Sure, I’m ok. But—and pardon my French—what the bloody hell? I got captured just to get whipped then rescued by the reaper, Abbie?”

“It’s all part of his plan, sweetie,” my mother says, patting my shoulder. I’m still getting used to all this, to my parents being around, to our role in whatever grand, crazy scheme is at play. I wince against the lingering pain in my back. Though it’s begun to fade, it’s still there.

“I just wish we knew what the freaking plan was. Next, he’s going to tell me to staple my testicles to the wall without asking why. It’s part of the plan, Dean,” I say in sheer mockery of his voice.

“The plan,” the Liberator responds on cue, his voice echoing from all around and making me jump a good five feet, “is for you to wait for my signal. I am not at your beck and call; I am in many places at once, setting many things into motion.”

“Sheesh, someone’s touchy,” I mutter, and my parents shush me.

But the Liberator continues as though he hadn’t heard me. “You must wait and then help the reaper when the time is right. Very delicate things are being set into motion, and I must ask you to assist once more right now.”

“Oh, brother,” I mutter.

“I will now instruct you how to widen the hole that has been torn in the fabric of this realm. This is very important, too, because the wider the tear becomes, the better for our end goal.
